In this interview published on SnipeTonight, Enrico Michel suggests, as former boat builder, three important areas of improvement for SCIRA: a) boats database; b) rule changes; c) grandfather rule.
Today I would like to focus on letter b).
In my opinion the board should involve the boat builders prior to the presentation and formalization of any change in the measurement rules, because often even a small change can have a serious impact on the building of a boat both from the practical and the economical point of view.
Enrico Michel
Is Enrico an Umarell* or is he a privileged and expert source to listen to?
Currently anyone can comment on a rule change proposal, after its publication and before the Board vote (decision making process)
Enrico Michel suggests something more: the Board (or perhaps, better, the Technical Committee) should involve the Snipe Builders (but I also think of the mast producers or sailmakers) to understand the impact of a specific rule change.
Let’s not forget that boatyards are relatively small economic entities, but very important for our sport.
The point of view of the Snipe boat builders, in some cases, may not coincide with that of the association of all the Snipe members.
But knowing the opinion of those who are professionally involved in our game means considering a further and important element to evaluate the need for a rule change.
